Innocence and Ignorance - A True Mini Story
Standing in the back yard. We’re keeping my husband company. He's digging a final resting place for our dog. He's transitioning, any moment now.
Our daughter is in the carrier. Strapped on to my chest. She's excited over the leaves blowing in the wind. The birds are flying. She's loving it. Cute baby coos and flailing arms. She's so happy, but I'm holding back tears. Unsuccessfully.
My husband keeps digging. The pile of dirt grows. He's exhausted.
A neighbor is in his backyard talking to his family, next door. All I can understand is "Nigger... black mother fucker... I've been working... years... Monkey...".
Baby girl is still smiling. Entertained by the leaves. The birds. She's so innocent.
This is life right now.
